Finigan described ‘Sconset as “a step back in time.” It reminded me of the Cotswolds, in England. We walked past the Whaling Museum, a former candle factory transformed into a modern exhibition house for historic artifacts, and then along South Water Street, which is lined with pizzerias, ice cream shops Travel & Leasuire News, and bars. McDermott Barnes led me to Sylvia Antiques, an institution that has been owned by John Sylvia’s household for 3 generations. We left the lodge and walked alongside Centre Street, passing eating places, boutiques, and an occasional actual property office.

• In the evenings, we returned to Life House and sat around a hearth pit within the courtyard while immaculately dressed staffers brought us marshmallows and chocolate to make into s’mores over the fireplace.
